This program, developed in partnership with the Essex Community Heritage Organization, is designed to encourage children to be aware of the built environment, to appreciate their architectural heritage, and to establish a strong connection to the community in which they live. The program is a fourth grade residency program designed for students to explore the concept of home and to take a closer look at the structure and community they call home. The residency is devoted to studying local history with an emphasis on the architectural heritage.
Students learn how to identify basic three dimensional shapes used in design, construction materials and design details: roof lines, windows, doors. They exercise their knowledge through drawing, writing and hands-on activities in the classroom; and through activities outside the classroom that include sketching at home.
Students move from the study of the house as home to their neighborhood as home. They study the concept of boundaries and define the limits of their own neighborhood through mapping and photographing its unique natural and man-made features. They explore their school as a building and conduct an interview in the community recording school life in the past.
