Researching from a distance

Research Rates (for those unable to visit us)
Requesting information from a distance (phone, email, or mail) will incur the following fees:
$12.00/hour/request (members)
$25.00/hour/request (non-members)
$35.00/hour/request for non-profits
$50.00/hour/request for commercial researchers.

If you are in grades K-12, undergraduate and/or graduate school and you have questions regarding the history of Essex County people and/or places and need guidance with research projects, please call or email and we'll gladly help you at NO CHARGE.

Please see the guidelines below for your research needs to be met.


We encourage researchers to use both textual and visual resources. Akin to the use of textual documents, digital or copy surrogates of our photographs may also be requested as a research tool in order to understand Essex County History. Therefore, all researchers (members, non-members, non-profits, and commercial researchers) who contact the Brewster Library from a distance may request either text and/or copies of photographs by library staff.

Please follow these procedures in order for you needs to be met:

1. All research requests must be submitted on the Request for Information Form. Researchers must also initial the section regarding our reproduction rules, following requests. The research form must be submitted to us by mail with proper corresponding payment before we can begin any research. The form can be downloaded below, or requested by email or mail.

2. If, after we have conducted preliminary research for you which included surrogates of a document (text or image), and you would like permission to use the surrogates for publication, a Reproduction Permission Form for Publication must be submitted to the Director. Please allow 30 days for permission to be granted and for us to prepare the images.

*Please be advised, we do not facilitate off site research for patrons, we only utilize the information we have within our repository but will gladly refer you to other libraries, research facilities, genealogists, websites or historians so that your research needs can be met.
